Marek Pasieczny has been sign the contract with PWM for publishing his work for solo guitar titled ‘The Tango Impressions‘ – Tribute to the art of Astor Piazzolla. The composition has been recently recorded by one of the finest Polish guitarists Grzegorz Krawiec on CD „Dialog”.

World Premiere of new work for solo guitar!

After many years of composing highly advanced pieces both technically and musically demanding, I felt the need to write something considerably simpler in form and language. This composition was bent on the idea of creating something not only for professional guitarists, but also for those still studying at secondary school level.

Little Sonata (titled inspired by Paul Hindemith’s “Kleine Sonate” for cello and piano) is an easy four-movement short composition, leaning on the form of the sonata and kept in the tonal post-classical and neo-romantic language. It was inspired by the cycle for solo piano Impromptus Op . 9 by Franz Schubert.

Written entirely on the piano and later ‘adapted’ for the guitar – it explains the highly pianistic chordal structures and harmonies that dictate the structure of the whole work. It was nevertheless composed with simplicity and ease for the guitar in mind.

This work is dedicated to my friend and great guitarists Krzysztof Pełech.

“Kikuidataki is the name of the smallest Bird in Japan and the World’s smallest hummingbird of its kind. The native script is “King birds”. Kikuidataki is characterized by its yellow crown crest. I strived to capture and imitate its movements through sonoristic and colouristic effects. In depicting the Japanese impression, the main melody was inspired and based on the Japanese melody “Itsuki no komuriuta” (Lullaby of Itsuki).

This is my first piece for string quartet. I started to write this quartet in 2007, but finally finished it a few weeks ago. It is in an adapted 'small’ concerto form (fugue and cadenzas in 1st movement, impressionistic slow 2nd movement and 'furious’ finale in 3rd movement).

The atmosphere created by the music should pay tribute to some of the great string quartet writing done before me (starts with Haydn and Mozart and ends with Shostakovich, Lutoslawski and Bartok).

Special thanks to Bede Williams for recording and EXTRA SPECIAL THANKS to Ian, Alan, Mery and Christoff. I am privileged as a composer to have such good instrumentalists/musicicians at my desposal.

Marek Pasieczny porwał „Wściekłą Polką” (recenzja)

Ludowe polskie melodie zapisane na gitarę i orkiestrę symfoniczną? Oj, tak! Marek Pasieczny swoim „Concerto polacco” uwiódł publiczność VI Lubuskich Spotkań Gitarowych. Sala Filharmonii Zielonogórskiej trzęsła się od braw. Echa „Chodzonego”, to znów religijnej pieśni „Cichy zapada zmrok”. I jeszcze „Za górkę zaszła” od Grójca/Worów, a na finał porywająca sądecka „Wściekła Polka”… A wszystko 30-letni blondyn o długich palcach rozpisał na gitarę (własną), skrzypce, obój, fagot, kotły, harfę i… pstrykanie palcami! Po takim występie jak dziś w Filharmonii Zielonogórskiej, chciałoby się zapakować tego absolwenta wrocławskiej Akademii Muzycznej wraz z symfonikami do samolotu, żeby fruwali po świecie jako ambasadorzy kultury polskiej. W sumie to już się dzieje, bowiem tuż po zielonogórskim koncercie Marek Pasieczny leci do Japonii, gdzie ma zaplanowane tournee.

Standing ovation at The Lutoslawski’s hall in Warsaw!

Zainteresowanie folklorem stanowi zwykle pewną fazę, czy też serię epizodów w twórczości kompozytora. W naturalny sposób po dość krótkim czasie mieszkania poza granicami Polski, przyszła do mnie nieodparta chęć zaczerpnięcia z polskiej muzyki ludowej. Concerto Polacco (koncert „Polski”), to owoc już kilkuletniej fascynacji folklorem polskim i jego niebywałą wręcz różnorodnością.
Sam folklor jest zawsze podporządkowany estetyce twórczej. I tak dzieje się i w tym przypadku. Ale chciałbym tu zwrócić uwagę na sposób traktowania tworzywa folklorystycznego.

Można by wyróżnić trzy ogólne rodzaje jego zastosowania: cytat, stylizację i syntezę. Cytowanie jest częste w utworach użytkowych (do melodii zbliżonej do oryginału ludowego dodaje się dość schematyczny akompaniament, wstęp, zakończenie). Częstszym zjawiskiem jest stylizacja (jest to świadoma twórczość w duchu ludowym, a nie bezpośrednie nawiązywanie do folkloru). I w końcu synteza.
Kompozytorzy zwracający się do muzyki ludowej mają zwykle większe potrzeby artystyczne aniżeli stylizacja czy opracowywanie melodii ludowych. Tak też jest i w przypadku tego koncertu. I tu w proces tworzenia wkradła się właśnie synteza. Dla twórców inspirujących się muzyką ludową ważniejsze jest wyrażenie ducha tej muzyki, a więc nie tylko uwzględnienie cech melodycznych, rytmicznych, ale nawet bardziej – strony brzmieniowej, dynamicznej, harmonicznej, nastroju etc. Ogólnie chodzi tu o „czucie tej muzyki” – jak mawiał Fryderyk Chopin. W przypadku tej kompozycji ‘czucie’ odbywa się także poprzez techniki kompozytorskie wieku XX-go (i szeroko pojętą XX-sto wieczną szkołę orkiestracji). W przypadku tego koncertu chodziło mi także o „odświeżenie” warsztatu kompozytorskiego i wniesienie doń elementarnej ekspresji oraz motoryczności właśnie z folkloru.
Samo ‘Concerto Polacco’ to w formie pięcioczęściowa suita. Inspirowana rytmem, melodiami ale przede wszystkim niebywale specyficznym i niepowtarzalnym klimatem polskiego folkloru.

To moja osobista synteza z polską muzyką ludową.

Pasieczny meets Penderecki at Canterbury Cathedral

[inspic=139,left,,0]Pasieczny’s new piece for brass quintet, based on Polish folk dances, will be performed on April 24th in the Canterbury Cathedral by the ‘Pure Brass’ (Tom Poulson, Samantha McShane ,Fraser Russell ,Gordon Seith and Mandy Murphy).
The concert is part of the festival ‘Sounds New’ and is called the ‘Cracov Connection’ . Apart from Pasieczny’s brass quintet, there will be works by Krzysztof Penderecki, Hanna Kulenty, Roxanna and Andrzej Panufnik. Both Roxanna Panufnik and Krzysztof Penderecki will be in attendance at this event.

[inspic=142,left,,0] Interest in folklore often makes up a certain phase or episode in a composer’s works. Living beyond the borders of Poland, it naturally came to me with compelling desire to draw inspiration from Polish folk music. But folklore for me has always been subordinate as a creative aesthetic.
Three general kinds of treatment of folk materials can be distinguished in musical works: quotation, stylization and synthesis. Quoting occurs commonly in works for practical purposes, putting together schematic accompaniment, introduction, and ending to the approximate melody of the original folk tune. Stylization is a more frequent phenomenon. In this case there is a conscious awareness of the spirit of folk music. The linking to folklore is not as direct as quoting. However, composers turning to folk music usually have larger artistic needs than stylization or the simple working out of folk melodies. For those inspired by folk music, the most important factor is the expression of the spirit of this music. The regard is not only for melodic and rhythmical features, but also the sound, dynamic, and harmonic aspects. It’s about the „sensation of the music” as F. Chopin said. It’s about „refreshing” the composer’s skills by bringing to it expression through rhythmical diversity (this relates especially to works of the 20th century). As the result of my episodic symbiosis with Polish folklore, the brass quintet came into being. This is a seven movement – partial suite leaning on several faintly well-known folk melodies and Polish dances, such as kolomajka, olender, krzyzok and trojak.This is my personal synthesis with Polish folk music.
